Algarve hiking paradise

In the southwest of the Algarve is the Serra de Monchique, a little-visited, green hills and mountains. With its fertile mountain slopes and the fragrant pine and eucalyptus forests, it forms an impressive contrast to the nearby Atlantic coast. The Via Algarviana, once an old pilgrimage route, now a wonderful long-distance hiking trail through the completely unknown hinterland and the Rota Vicentina, a spectacular long-distance hiking trail along the wild west coast of the Algarve, runs here. The rough west coast is a wonderful contrast to the quiet beaches of the south coast.

Four guided hikes lead to scenic highlights of the Algarve during our group hiking week: from the hilly landscape of the Serra de Monchique, characterized by cork oaks and pine forests, to the paradisiacal south coast with its small bays and rocky outcrops to the imposing west coast with its typical steep rock formation.

Accommodation in Monchique

During the hiking week you will spend the night in the small, picturesque town of Monchique in the mountains of the mountain range of the same name. It is approx. 23 km from here to the south and west coast. Our accommodation is located on the outskirts of Monchique at a height of approx. 495 m - a former Portuguese country house. The quinta is embedded in a spacious, natural garden with a pool, sunbathing lawns, fruit trees, cozy arbors, a pond and a yoga area. A winter garden and a billiard room offer a cozy setting for conversations.

The main house, which was formerly used as a manor house, has been restored in the traditional style and converted into a guest house. In the main house there are 5 double rooms each with their own shower / toilet and one double room with shared shower / toilet. In the adjoining building there are 3 maisonette rooms, each with its own shower / toilet. Two small houses for up to 4 people and equipped with a kitchenette and shower / toilet complete the accommodation offer.

Enjoy the view of the mountains at breakfast on your hiking holiday in Portugal. Depending on the weather, the breakfast buffet is served in front of or in the winter garden. On four evenings a week there is also a joint dinner in the quinta: Together, delicious pizza is baked in the 100-year-old stone oven and a typical Portuguese barbecue evening (churrasco) is organized. On the other days there is the possibility of dining in a typical Portuguese way in Monchique.

Hiking program in detail

Four day hikes between 4 and 6 hours of walking lead to the most beautiful places on the south and west coast and in the Serra de Monchique: along the steep coast and on beaches, through gorges and maquis, over meadows and fields, but also into the hilly hinterland.

South coast - from the fishing village of Ferragudo to the grottoes of the Algar Seco near Carvoeiro: Our starting point is Praia Grande in Ferragudo. From here we hike along the coast towards Carvoeiro and discover five beautiful beaches on the way, as well as the 2,000 year old Roman tower ruin "Torre de Marinha". Countless impressive rock formations and grottos can be admired here, some even say they are the most beautiful in the Algarve. This hiking trail is diverse, with mountains and valleys and also easy, relaxing sections. Walking time approx. 4 hours, approx. 13 km

West coast - from Aljezur to Arrifana via Monte Clerigo: Transfer to Aljezur. We start at the market square of Aljezur and first visit the legendary castle, which can also be found on Portugal's national flag, and which offers a great view of the fertile Aljezurs valley. We continue inland on the natural hiking trail "Rota Vicentina" to the coastal hiking trail "Fishermen's Trail", which leads through the fantastic dune landscapes and along the breathtaking rocky coast. After a break in Monte Clerigo, we hike on to Arrifana, a shell-shaped surfing and bathing beach, where we spend the rest of the time. Transfer back to Monchique and dinner together at the quinta. Walking time approx. 6 hours, approx. 19 km

South coast - from Luz to Lagos: Transfer to Praia da Luz. From Praia da Luz we first go to 109 m above sea level, where our hike begins along the spectacular cliffs towards Lagos. This route is particularly popular with photographers among hikers. In Porto da Mos we stop in a cafe where you should try the delicious Pastel de Nata and then visit the Ponta da Piedade with its bizarre rock formations. We end the hike in the historic town of Lagos. There we have time to explore and relax on one of the many beaches in the town. The inviting old town, a variety of sights, the colorful market square and the traditional cafes as well as local shops invite you to marvel and explore. Transfer back to Monchique and dinner together at the quinta. Walking time approx. 4 hours

Monchique Mountains - from Monchique to the highest mountain in the Algarve: Our last hike starts again directly at the Quinta. Along the "Trilho da Fóia", through forests and valleys, along small waterfalls and springs, it goes up to the summit of Foia - the highest mountain in the Algarve (902 m). Up here you have a spectacular panoramic view of the south coast when the weather is clear. If you want, you can browse the local craft market for souvenirs. It goes down on the "Via Algarviana" back to the quinta. Dinner together in a local restaurant in Monchique. Walking time approx. 4 hours, approx. 13 km
